Owner and founder of My Portuguese, Amanda was born and raised in San Diego, California as a first generation Portuguese-American. Both her parents are immigrants of the Azores islands, and they were diligent in raising Amanda with the language and culture of their homeland.
She grew up heavily involved in San Diego's Portuguese community, with such groups and activities as the Folkloric Dance Group, Youth Group and later Board of Director for the UPSES Hall. She held titles to include Miss Cabrillo Festival 2002 and Holy Spirit Festa Queen 2005, and received several accolades including scholarships and later being chosen by the Portuguese government to represent the San Diego Portuguese youth in a 2016 international outreach effort hosted in five of the nine Azores islands.
Her interest in the Portuguese language persisted beyond her formidable years. She enrolled in an intensive language course in Lisbon in 2004, then later spent one year abroad during her college journey toward a Bachelor of Arts in International Business and Management. She studied at Universidade do Minho in Braga in the Fall of 2008, and interned with Lisbon's famed soccer team Benfica in the Spring of 2009.
Amanda has been tutoring beginners in Portuguese since 2008, and has always dreamed of making the service available for language learners outside of San Diego, in light of limited language learning resources for the European Portuguese dialect.
She aims to reach a wider audience with this online platform, but is accessible to you, should you need additional assistance.
